Здесь похоже ошибка: We were in a very difficult position. We didn’t KNOW what to do.
По таблице неправильных глаголов «know» в Past Simple пишется «knew».
Но ведь у нас отрицание, появилось слово did, оно перетаскивает на себя past, поэтому в связке с did мы используем начальную форму глагола (т.е. в отрицаниях, как у вас, а так же в вопросах)
Was Carol at the party last night? 一 Yes, she was wearing (wear) a really nice dress.

мы хотим показать, что в тот момент, когда я ее видел на празднике, на ней было надето платье. Честно говоря, носители очень любят говорить wear в форме continuous именно в таком контексте
